A Tandem Accelerator Mass Spectrometry system (JAEA-AMS-TONO) was installed at the Tono Geoscience Center, JAEA in 1997 for measurement isotopes in environmental samples. The main activity is radiocarbon dating for geoscience. The system has offered services for the facility utilization for scientists who work in external institutions since 2006. In this presentation, we report to annual operation status and improvements in the system at the fiscal year of 2008. Measured samples and time have reached 879 and 1102 h in the fiscal year. In order to stabilize an ion beam, we rearranged an injection beam line, adjusted the temperature on a Cs oven of an ion source and improved a rotating shaft of an index wheel and a corona probe.

Tandetron Accelerator Mass Spectrometer in the Japan Atomic Energy Agency Mutsu office (JAEA-AMS-Mutsu: High Voltage Engineering Europa product, Model 4130-AMS) consists of 3MV tandem type accelerator and the 2 beam lines for measurement of isotope ratio for carbon and iodine. Steady operation of carbon beam line was started in December, 1999 and that of iodine beam line was started in May, 2003. This facility was initially used for studies on transport processes of radionuclides in marine environment. From the fiscal year 2006, this facility became a shared facility to provide data for various projects at JAEA and others. This report describes the operational situation and a confirmation result of the quality of the measurement data in fiscal year 2008 (April 1, 2008 - March 31, 2009).

Dai-22-Kai Tandemu Kasokuki Oyobi Sono Shuhen Gijutsu No Kenkyukai Hokokushu, p.129 - 132, 2010/01

The JAEA-Tokai tandem accelerator was built for basic science researches with heavy ions. Its superconducting booster was completed in 1994 for increasing the acceleration energy of ions. The booster consists of 40 superconducting acceleration resonators and 10 cryostats. Every resonator is a coaxial quarter wave resonator (QWR) of which frequency is 129.8 MHz, and optimum beam velocity is 10% of the light velocity. When it was built, the acceleration field gradients of superconducting resonators were 5.0 MV/m at RF power input of 4 W on their average. The performance decrease little by little, and it become 4.0 MV/m now. Some of the resonators generate X-rays from a low electric field. A field emission will be occurred from small contaminations accumulated on the surfaces of niobium. We examined the high pressure water jet rinsing (HPWR) to re-recondition the superconducting booster. The HPWR is the technology of removing small contaminations on resonator surfaces, and very effective for the improvement of acceleration field gradients. The acceleration field gradients of 20 on-line resonators were improved from 4.4 MV to 5.7 MV on their average.
